How to Transport a Mini Excavator: Trailer, Weight, and Legal Limits

Transporting a mini excavator starts with the right trailer, verified weights, and legal oversize limits. Here is the complete towing and hauling guide.

Transporting a mini excavator safely comes down to four numbers: machine weight, trailer capacity, truck tow rating, and axle legal limits. A 1-ton excavator can be moved with a heavy-duty pickup and equipment trailer; a 3.5-ton compact machine usually needs a small dump trailer, a 1-ton truck, and, in many jurisdictions, a CDL.

Here is the step-by-step process for hauling CYD-class mini excavators from 0.8 to 3.5 tons.

1. Know the actual weights

Do not trust the brochure weight alone. Add the bucket, options, fuel, and fluids:

MachineBase weightLoaded, with bucket + fuel
1.0 ton micro (CYD-10)1,000 kg≈ 1,150 kg
1.8 ton (CYD-18)1,800 kg≈ 2,000 kg
2.5 ton (CYD-25)2,500 kg≈ 2,750 kg
3.5 ton compact (CYD-35)3,500 kg≈ 3,850 kg

If a machine is shipped to you, the shipping weight will be listed on the packing list — use that figure, not the spec-sheet weight.

2. Match the trailer

Aim for the machine to be no more than 80 percent of the trailer’s gross capacity:

  • 1–1.8 tons: 7,000–9,000 lb tandem-axle equipment trailer behind a 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup.
  • 2.5 tons: 10,000–14,000 lb trailer; check GVWR carefully.
  • 3.5 tons: 14,000 lb+ trailer or a small dump trailer; a 1-ton dually or Class 4–5 truck is strongly recommended.

Place the machine so the center of gravity is slightly ahead of the trailer axles. About 60 percent of the load should ride forward of the axle line.

3. Know the legal limits in your area

Rules vary by country and state. Three rules that apply almost everywhere:

  • CDL / endorsement thresholds: in the US, a combined (GCWR) over 26,000 lb usually requires a CDL; many states require a non-commercial Class A or equipment endorsement even below that.
  • Width limits: most excavators over 2.5 tons exceed the 8 ft 6 in standard width once the bucket is positioned.
  • Overwidth/overweight permits: if you exceed limits, get a permit before moving, and use a pilot/escort vehicle where required.

Check your local DMV and DOT rules for the exact thresholds in your region.

4. Secure the machine

  • Lower the blade/bucket to the deck; never haul with the arm raised
  • Use at least four chains or straps rated at 1.5x the machine weight
  • Install binders and cross-check tension after the first mile
  • Verify all wheels are chocked and the slew lock is engaged

FAQ

Can a half-ton truck tow a mini excavator?

Only the lightest micro machines with a very light trailer and even then it is tight. Most 1-ton models already exceed the practical payload of a half-ton truck.

Do I need a CDL to haul a mini excavator?

Frequently yes, once the combined truck + trailer + machine weight crosses your jurisdiction’s threshold. Always verify local rules.

What about shipping long distance instead?

For long hauls, consider an LTL carrier or full flatbed; it is often cheaper and safer than towing thousands of miles. Our overseas shipping guide covers the paperwork side.
